Know Your Options.

Home Care

Home care agencies provide caregivers to come to an individual’s home to provide non-medical care, like assistance with showers, medication management, help with dressing and grooming, meal prep and customized tasks.

Shifts are often 3+. hours, including round-the-clock care and overnight stays.

This option is usually not covered by medical insurance or Medicare, and is not the same as ‘Home Health’, referred by a doctor with a focus on therapy.

Home Health

Home health services provide essential medical care to seniors in homes or at senior living communities or group homes.

This is mainly for physical therapy, and sometimes bathing assistance.

It’s not a solution for someone needing to depend on a caregiver for longer care shifts.

A physician referral is required to set up therapists or professionals for rehabilitation, often following an event like a fall, stroke or surgery.

Home health is covered by insurance, however therapists usually visit an hour or so, two or three times a week and don’t schedule extra ‘custom tasks’ like meal prep or cleaning.

Hospice & Palliative Care

Hospice and palliative care are specialized medical approaches aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals facing serious, life-limiting illnesses.

While hospice care is specifically designed for patients who are nearing the end of life and are typically no longer seeking curative treatment, palliative care can be provided at any stage of illness and focuses on alleviating symptoms, pain, and stress associated with serious health conditions.

Sometimes individuals ‘graduate off’ hospice services and make improvements, especially if they’ve made a change to an environment where care, regular meals and medication management improves their overall well being.

Both forms of care prioritize comfort and dignity while offering support not just to patients but also to their families.
